5 fun outdoor activities in Hong Kong
Tuesday, March 26, 2019
Spring has finally sprung and there is nothing nicer than being outdoors when the weather is bright and sunny. After all, hot and humid weather looms in the summer, and winter weather can be so unpredictable! So we’ve rounded up our favourite activities to do outside to ensure you make the most of the great weather and get your Vitamin D.

1. Picnic
Hong Kong has some wonderful country parks that are very accessible and open to the public, as well as plenty of parks with open spaces to while away a few hours on the grass. Take a packed lunch and a picnic blanket and we guarantee you’ll feel blissed out after a few hours! Our favourites are:
• Mount Austin Playground, Mount Austin Road, The Peak: Just a few minutes walk from the Peak tram station is this elegant park complete with Victorian style architecture and a well-sized outdoor playground. Grass, slides, swings and plenty of space for the kids to run around.
• Tai Po Waterfront Park, Tai Po Waterfront Park, Dai Fat Street, Tai Po, New Territories: The grass areas extend right to the water’s edge, ensuring a romantic and peaceful views of the water, but without the hassle of sand in your food! There are plenty of things to do if the kids get bored, from climbing the lookout tower, to checking out the creepy crawlies at the insect house.

2. Visit a farm
Kadoorie Farm and Botanical Gardens, Lam Kam Road, Tai Po, New Territories (https://www.kfbg.org/eng/)

Nature and animal lovers will love Kadoorie Farm and Botanical Garden! Dedicated to nature education and sustainable agriculture, kids will love walking the nature trail, visiting the reptile house, smiling at monkeys, and relaxing under the canopies of butterflies.

3. Camping
Spring is the perfect time to camp in HK and there are heaps of wonderful sites throughout the New Territories and Lantau. One of Hong Kong's best beaches is also one of the best campsites in Hong Kong! Long Ke Wan, a beautiful, long white beach located in Sai Kung Country Park has always been a favorite escape for Hong Kongers looking for a slice of paradise in their backyard. Long Ke Wan is easier to access than its sisters, Sai Wan and Tai Long Wan, making a camping trip here easier on the kiddos. With older kids, you can start the hike at the stage one of the MacLehose Trail and hike 3 hours alongside the reservoir to Long Ke. For the little ones or when you are carrying a lot of camping gear, take a taxi directly to the end of the the Dam on High Island Reservoir toward Long Ke Wan. There will be a pavillion there to note the start of the hike to the beach. This hike takes around 25-35 minutes and is not stroller-friendly. You will need to bring everything to the campsite that you need, as there are no restaurants or stores in sight. There are BBQ pits available. If you need tents and other camping supplies, pop by Sai Kung Town before you make the trek.

4. Biking
From the best seaside cycling trails in Tseung Kwan O, Tai Po and Hong Kong Island to BMX hills in the New Territories, options are bountiful and within easy reach across Hong Kong for beginners to advanced. Get those helmets on, saddle up, and go! Bike-friendly roads (not car-friendly) include Tseung Kwan O Bike Paths, starting at Velodrome, Po Hong Road, Tseung Kwan O and Cheung Chau Island. The area that has the most rental options in Cheung Chau is Pak Tai Temple area (Pak She Praya Road by basketball court). For little legs, tuk-tuks are also available. You can bike the whole island including the seaside (packed with yummy restaurants), the beachside, the town (a real local feel), and up to Reclining Rock and Cheung Po Tsai Cave.

5. Horse-riding
The Hong Kong Jockey Club ( http://www.hkjcridingschools.com ) operates three public riding schools: Tuen Mun, Pok Fu Lam and Lei Yue Mun Park. Ideal for kids aged 6 and up, the school offers a wide range of courses and activities to learn more about horse riding, horse care, and equestrian sport. Note, the Pokfulam school fills up very quickly! And, although it is reserved for members only, the HKJC Adopt a Pony kids program is one to check out if you and your kids are horse obsessed! Little ones can adopt a pony of their choice and gear up with a welcome pack complete with Jockey goggles. What's more, they can visit their little friends and take them for a ride at the Beas River Country Club.

Just remember, whatever outdoor activity you choose to do, there are a few caveats: take only pictures (and your rubbish) and leave only (small) footprints!
