Hong Kong students ranked third in global reading literacy ranking
Tuesday, January 16, 2018
At the latest Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS), Hong Kong ranked behind Russia and Singapore. However, shocking statistics show that only1 out of 10 parents read with their children at home, far below the global average of 39 percent. This negatively influences children's interest in reading, which is why only around 1/3 of children said they liked reading, placing Hong Kong 33rd in the world. A key takeaway is reading attainment of students who received extra tuition after school was NOT significantly different from those who had no tutoring, showing the deciding factor is the level of PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT at home.
