Parenting Tips: How do you praise your child?
Monday, July 25, 2016
How do you praise your child? Is "good job" becoming your motto? When you applaud your child for the same things that are not true achievements, the power praises' will diminish its power.

"Overpraising your child can get them hooked on success and celebration instead of being satisfied by his/her own accomplishment," says Elizabeth Hartley-Brewer, author of Praising Boys Well and Praising Girls Well. There are two factors to consider when praising your child: quantity and quality. Do you overdo it.

If your child could count to 10 under the aged of 4 you do not need to praise them every time. When you praise your child, you need evidence and back it up. Instead of "good job", try "thank you for being loving and sharing your toy with your brother without being asked". Emphasize on the process, and not the end result. Lastly, do not compare your child with other children.
