Sensory Play at Acorn Playgroup!
Monday, August 21, 2017
Mighty Oaks offers many different sensory activities that are always brimming with fun and fabulous materials. Here are a few examples: fizzy slime and goo sensory activities; ice cup and water combo; super eye sensory bins; predict, measure and pour activities; garden sensory tubs; ocean sensory trays; and barefoot sensory walks.
Research has shown that children who lack sensory stimulation early on can develop sensory processing issues that affect them in a myriad of ways. Sensory play is any activity that stimulates the five main senses of touch, smell, sight, taste and sound, as well as the two not-as-frequently-mentioned senses: vestibular (sense of balance) and proprioceptive (sense of where each body part is in relation to the rest). The benefits of sensory play are numerous, including language skills where kids learn new vocabulary as they talk about their experiences, social skills when kids play together, fine & gross motor and dramatic play skills as they use the materials to engage in play such as “building roads”.
